Camp Savoy and the Lindy Today |
|
We have been teaching together for many years now and have seen the dance we love – The Lindy Hop – go through many changes. However, recently we’ve noticed, after being away from the scene for a while (Broadway, bringing up baby Mikey etc) that there has been a large shift in the style and interpretation of Lindy, and Swing Camps in general have not been slow in reflecting the changes in current trends e.g. Dean Collins style, Hollywood, Shag, Balboa and so on. Some of the larger camps Camp Hollywood, Balboa Fest, to name a few, specifically celebrate these style additions. However, the classic style of Lindy Hop sometimes naively referred to as Savoy Style has - until recently, been negatively relegated from its position as a pioneer of all Swing Dances to being often described, as “Old School”. There clearly seemed a need for a re-polish of the image of this great dance before history inevitably tried to repeat itself. At Camp Savoy our intention is to have a camp that celebrates the best of The Savoy Ballroom and therefore the best of The Lindy Hop, the original and still King of all Swing Dances. Our aim is to re-educate - especially our newcomers – the immense history of its origins and its enduring relevance to today’s Swing World.Lindy has always been a History-led dance and it is important to us to continue the story of The Lindy Hop now and to future generations.
